Bedroom wall decor for adults: 5 rules to get it right

Decorating the walls of an adult bedroom requires a little more thought than other rooms. The stakes are different: it's not just about filling an empty space, but about creating a space that promotes relaxation, reflects a personality, and stands the test of time. A bedroom wall decoration that is too busy, too garish, or poorly positioned can lead to visual fatigue.

Here are five practical rules to guide you.

Rule #1: One centerpiece, not five

There's a strong temptation to multiply posters to "fill" the walls. This is generally a mistake. In an adult bedroom, the fewer elements there are, the more each one counts. A single poster for the bedroom that is well-chosen, well-positioned, and well-framed has more impact than five images hung without logic.

The centerpiece is ideally placed on the wall opposite the entrance door (the first wall the eye perceives upon entering) or above the headboard.

Our selection for a "centerpiece" wall:

Rule #2: Hanging height changes everything

The museum rule, with the center of the artwork 145–150 cm from the floor, is a good starting point for an adult bedroom. It roughly corresponds to eye level when standing. But there's an important exception: above a headboard, the center of the poster should be about 15–20 cm above the top of the bed frame, not 145 cm from the floor.

Hanging too high visually disconnects the furniture from the wall; too low, the poster seems to "fall" onto the pillows.

Rule #3: Choose in harmony with the bedding, not the walls

Most people look for a poster that matches the color of the walls. This is a limited approach. The visible bedding surface (duvet, pillows, bed linen) represents a much larger surface, visually closer to the headboard. It is with the bedding that you should create a color dialogue, not with the walls.

Concrete example: natural beige and off-white linen bedding goes very well with illustrations in warm tones (ochre, sand, copper) like the Canet en Roussillon Poster or the Argelès sur Mer Port Poster.

Rule #4: Format based on bed width

The size of the poster must be proportional to the width of the bed, especially if it is hung at the headboard. Here's a simple guide:

Bed Width Ideal Headboard Format
Single bed (90 cm) A3 · 30×42 cm
Twin XL bed (120 cm) 50×70 cm
Double bed (140–160 cm) 70×100 cm
King size bed (180–200 cm) 100×140 cm or diptych 2 × 50×70 cm

For a large bed, a diptych is often the best solution: two complementary posters placed side-by-side create a panoramic effect without requiring a single format that is difficult to frame.

Headboard diptych idea: Cap Bear Poster + Port Vendres Jetty Lighthouse Poster in 50×70 cm each: two lighthouses, same purple and orange palette, natural panoramic effect.

Rule #5: Consider evening artificial light

Adult bedrooms are often lit with warm artificial light (filament bulbs, orange bedside lamps). This lighting changes the perception of colors in a poster: cool tones become more neutral, while warm tones (ochre, terracotta, gold) are accentuated and gain an additional, very enveloping warmth.

If the bedroom lighting is warm, posters with Mediterranean tones—sunsets, port lights, colorful facades—take on an extra dimension in the evening.

Adult Bedroom Styles and Associated Posters

Minimalist / Nordic style bedroom

White walls, light wood, neutral textiles. The poster acts as the sole touch of color or landscape. Prioritize simple compositions with large areas of sky or water.

Mediterranean / Bohemian style bedroom

Warm tones, colorful textiles, natural materials. The poster can be more color-saturated, more narrative.

Industrial / Contemporary style bedroom

Concrete, metal, gray and black. Posters with a reduced palette, high contrast, or architectural composition integrate well into these environments.
