Qu'est-ce qu'une barque catalane ?

La barque catalane, ou simplement « catalane », est un bateau de pêche traditionnel de la Méditerranée nord-occidentale, reconnaissable à sa grande voile latine triangulaire et à son arrière pointu. Longue de moins de dix mètres, elle servait au début du XXe siècle à pêcher la sardine et l'anchois au filet le long de la Côte Vermeille. C'est cette embarcation emblématique du littoral roussillonnais que met à l'honneur l'affiche Barques Catalanes de Foliove.

Comment s'appellent les barques catalanes ?

On les appelle simplement « barques catalanes » ou « catalanes ». Ailleurs en Méditerranée, des embarcations voisines portent d'autres noms (les bettes du golfe du Lion, les tartanes…), mais sur la Côte Vermeille le nom catalan est resté. La plus connue, « Notre-Dame de la Consolation » (1913), est liée aux pêcheurs de Collioure.

Qu'est-ce que la voile latine ?

La voile latine est une grande voile triangulaire portée par une longue antenne (vergue) inclinée sur le mât. Elle permettait aux barques catalanes de naviguer efficacement même par vent faible, comme souvent en Méditerranée. Par petit temps, les pêcheurs ajoutaient parfois une petite voile d'avant, la « polacre » (ou foc).

Pourquoi les barques catalanes sont-elles colorées ?

Leurs coques sont peintes de couleurs éclatantes : bleus profonds, rouges vifs, jaunes ensoleillés qui tranchent avec le blanc de la voile latine. Ces teintes vives sont l'une des signatures des ports du Roussillon, de Collioure au Barcarès. L'affiche Barques Catalanes reprend fidèlement cette palette méditerranéenne.

Où voir des barques catalanes aujourd'hui ?

On les admire surtout à Collioure, amarrées au pied du clocher, ainsi qu'à Port-Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer et Le Barcarès. Banyuls, Collioure et Le Barcarès étant les trois ports où on les construisait traditionnellement. Aujourd'hui, des associations les restaurent et les font naviguer lors des rassemblements de voiles latines.

L'affiche existe en cinq formats : A4 21×30 cm (13 €), A3 30×42 cm (20 €), B2 50×70 cm (30 €), B1 70×100 cm (65 €) et B0 100×140 cm (85 €). À partir du A3, elle est proposée en tirage limité à 200 exemplaires pour le monde.

How I design each poster, by hand, in the Pyrénées-Orientales

Foliove is my daily work. I create each illustration by hand, from my studio nestled in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Wacom, stylus, patience. No digital shortcuts, no images found anywhere other than in my souvenir photos, no effects applied with a click. Each line is consciously drawn, starting from a blank screen.

Printing is done nearby, at an Imprim'Vert certified printer in Elne. This is no accident: I can check the colors in person, adjust if necessary, and discuss directly with the team. They prioritize solvent-free inks and certified paper. It's a relationship, not just an order.

My subjects are born from my travels. A shade of the sky, a detail of a facade, a season frozen in an instant. I transpose them into a drawing once I return, often much later. It's my way of preserving these moments and offering them to those, like you, who look at them.
