I drew Carcassonne from above, looking for the angle that gives the citadel its true silhouette. The one you see from the road, when you arrive from the Aude plain and it suddenly appears, perched on its hill as if the Middle Ages had never really ended.

The Cité de Carcassonne is the largest medieval fortress in Europe. Its 3 kilometres of ramparts, 52 towers and double concentric walls have witnessed more than 2,500 years of history, from the Romans to the Visigoths, from the Cathars to the Crusaders, through to Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, who restored it in the 19th century, stone by stone, before it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. What I wanted to draw was that very layering: the Middle Ages and its romantic restoration, the original towers and those Viollet-le-Duc rebuilt with their northern slate roofs, a detail that still sparks debate among historians.

A Carcassonne poster for those who have walked the ramparts, for those who have lived there or return every summer, and for those who have not yet been.
